OKAY PEOPLE.

There are two scenes in which Tony is wearing the Black Sabbath shirt and the arc reactor does not glow through. See exibit B and D.

At first I thought it could be lighting, the light in the room being stronger than the reactor. But that can’t be the case here. Then maybe they left the reactor light off to kind of match the mood of Coulson’s death, but then the light is gone again while Tony and Loki are chatting.

Any better ideas?

I can answer!! Because I don’t want to write my three essays and I have seen this movie too maaany tiiimes. 8D

So actually the short answer is that you’re sorta right.  The lighting and the way that Tony is standing (both in terms of posture and in relation to the camera) affect whether or not you can see the arc reactor.

So in the first one, you can actually see it really well, he’s just situated away from the camera, so the bulk of the glow is going off to Steve’s (and our) left, which is away from the camera.  So if he had been looking right at the camera, like he’s doing in picture C, you would have been able to see it fine.

The thing to remember with the other two is that Tony isn’t just wearing a Black Sabbath T-shirt, he’s also wearing a grey undershirt with long sleeves.  Look at the way the sleeves of the Black Sabbath shirt separate from the long-sleeves, particularly in pictures A and B.  So in B and D, he IS facing the camera, so it should be great, but in B, he’s hunched slightly, and his arms are folded forward, so the arc reactor isn’t pressed right up against his clothes, like in picture C, where he’s puffing out his chest in ludicrous Tony fashion.  In picture D, he’s leaning forward and extending his arm, which still doesn’t press the arc reactor as close to his chest.

Also, I guess it makes sense that you really couldn’t see it in picture D because it’s super bright in the room and I believe the arc reactor shows up better the darker the surrounding environment is.  Which is great for themes 8D  It also might depend on what KIND of light is in the surrounding area, but I have no idea.

I mean additionally, this might have just been a movie flub but I really don’t want to write my essays, so I’d much rather witter on tumblr about Tony’s arc reactor.

You win.

But if it is a mistake I will cry. How could they have their ‘performance issues’ joke and forget about the reactor?

Put that on the wrong blog. My bad.

Tech Porn: Monitor

#the thing I love most about the arc reactor isn’t just how impressive it is as a piece of tech #but how VISIBLE it is #like he could have just covered in something to make it look like regular skin #or even just solid metal #but it’s not #it glows so brightly that it shines through his shirt #because Tony didn’t choose to need it but he can damn well choose how he wears it#and so it’s bright and eye-catching and in-your-face - everything Tony is #he doesn’t tiptoe - he struts

Grant Imahara built an arc reactor with his bare hands. He cosplays as the Tenth Doctor. He built Geoffrey the Robot for Craig Ferguson. He competed in Battlebots. He worked at Lucasfilm and ILM and on upgrading R2 for the prequels.

A perfect person. And yes I typed that all up off the top of my head. Because I want to be Grant when I grow up.

Holy flying slatterpoop, Batman.

This guy should have a cameo part as someone working for Stark Industries. That would be great. Especially if he got to do sciencey tech stuff.

Sometimes I just think about the incredible amount of pain Tony Stark must go through every day; the pain of just being alive because he has an arc reactor wired into his chest, taking up the space where his thymus and upper right atrium if his heart should be, as well as his sternum, which is meant to protect those very organs. Imagine if someone hugs him too tight? Or, if something hits him in the chest and his arc reactor just rips through his body, crushing his vena cava, the branches of his aorta, his thymus, his trachea, his bronchi, his esophagus, his spine, his heart for god’s sake? He has a metal nuclear generator wired into his ribcage…how does his skin heal around it? How tightly does it hold? What is the pain like? Is that why he drinks, to numb the pain? Is that why he drives himself to exhaustion? Because he’s living a chronic pain nightmare every day. The suit and him are one, because when he’s using the suit, the arc reactor is keeping alive more than it is killing him. Tony is Iron Man, because if he weren’t made of stronger stuff, he would be dead.
