Okay. Not only is Eric Whitacre’s music fucking glorious, but it’s really cool to hear all these thousands of different people from around the world singing together. But not together. And it’s beautiful. And Eric Whitacre is hot.

We played this song in band my senior year. It was challenging as hell. The clef changed in the trombone part (so we had to play ridiculously high notes), and he wrote in the most bizarre time signatures in the entire world. (Also the video starts out very very quietly, but it might get pretty loud eventually.)

Ooooh yeah. His stuff is difficult to play. The school district banded together to play Cloudburst one year, and even though the notes are supposed to clash, getting them to clash just right was difficult. Very difficult.

But nowhere near as difficult as Buffalo Jump Ritual

Oh man, yes—playing clashing music is ridiculously challenging. Once we played some old music that was apparently composed by someone assigning notes/rests/accidentals to playing cards, then shuffling the deck and drawing them to write the song. Holy shit, it was impossible.

Ah, we played Buffalo Jump Ritual as well! That one was fun. I don’t remember the trombone part being too difficult, but you play woodwind, right?

I think that one of my favorite hard band pieces was Heart of the City. That one was so much fun. :D

Yeah, I played the oboe. Buffalo Jump had us playing runs up the wazoo. I had to stop myself from yelling FUCK every time I messed up. I hate runs. kjahsjdfhjBAAAAAH. Really.

I guess my favorite would have to be Kitten on the Keys arranged for a full orchestra. Yes, believe it or not. It. Was. Insaaaaaane. But sounded greeeaaaattttt.

I began to dislike the oboe after a while, so I quit.
